Welcome to Governors Bay Hotel

The Governors Bay Hotel is one of the oldest, if not one of the most beautiful Hotels in New Zealand. It has been in continuous operation since its establishment in 1870. After the devasting earthquakes of September 2010 and again, on 22nd of February and June 6th 2011, it is meticulously and fully restored to its former colonial glory. Of the 9 hotels in Lyttelton harbour prior to February 22nd, we are now only one of two that have survived.

For much of it’s existence the Hotel was known as The Ocean View Family Hotel and many came by ferry from Lyttelton to seek out it's "Pleasure Gardens", however, rather than its ocean outlook, it is the commanding views of Lyttelton harbour that it is well known for today. Around 1980 to 1995 it was briefly known as The Smugglers Arms but is today, central in name to the community which surrounds it. The Hotel enjoys a fine reputation for its gastro-pub style fare, friendly service and extensive selection of local wines and beers. Fantastic views await you out to Quail Island and Lyttelton Harbour from the garden bar, our new deck, restaurant, verandah and the guest rooms of the Governors Bay Hotel. There are great walks to be had along the shoreline, cycling trips, world famous private gardens and many water based activities are within minutes of the Hotel.

The Hotel is only 20 minutes by car from central Christchurch via Dyers Pass Road or 30 minutes via the Lyttelton Road Tunnel. We can cater for a wide variety of functions including dinner parties, wedding receptions, office parties, wakes, corporate planning meetings, and birthday parties.
Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your requirements.

The Governors Bay Hotel is independently owned by Jeremy Dyer and Clare Neville-Dyer since 2003
We also have a totally groovy tapas and craft beer bar situated in downtown Lyttelton.  Ecletic cocktails, late night service and our son, Louis Dyer runs a great ship here (proud parents)  https://www.facebook.com/civilandnaval

eat

We offer all day dining 364 days of the year*. We open daily from 11.00am for meals and remain open throughout the day until 9.00pm. Bookings are always recommended.

In keeping with our strong food focus our brief to our chefs is to produce all dishes from the base ingredients up. Stocks, soups, cakes and everything departing our kitchen should be prepared in-house ensuring you a quality gastro-pub fare. Wherever possible, we seek the best possible ingredients from what the seasons or markets currently offer and source them locally if possible.  Currently, our own gardens are providing our kitchen with a range of fresh fruit, tomatoes, corn, cucumbers and a range of herbs all grown organically.

We offer a number of dining locations within the Hotel and it’s grounds. Depending on the occasion we will recommend an area when you book. For instance, throughout the summer months, our inviting gardens with bountiful roses are a beacon for many of our guests during the day. Our bar area is great for casual dining in the evening and mixing with the locals. Through the cooler nights expect to be met with a very warming open fire. If a more private setting is required we suggest our Snug area (formerly known as a “Ladies Lounge”) or the restaurant which seats up to 70 guests, if a private function is your requirement.

Our current lunch and dinner menu you can view by following the link below. In addition to our standard fare we offer a number of daily specials ranging from fresh fish of the day, pasta of the day, soups, etc.

If you are contemplating a function at the hotel we suggest you contact us directly for a range of competitively priced menus designed for a range of budgets and tastes.

drink

Our public bar is your main point of  entry into our reception, whether you are in for the night, a casual drink, a great meal or a myriad of other good reasons. You will also be welcomed by warm professional staff or owners and one of the best views from any pub on the planet (true!*).

Guests enjoy a wide selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. There are 6 local brews on tap specialising in Monteiths beers and over 40 wines to choose from, including 14 by the glass. Whilst quaffing on a fine Monteiths Pilsener you might pause on the fine deck in front of you kindly sponsored by an unknown beer baron.  Many of our wines are selected on local regionalist criteria, so you will find many wines from the Peninsula, Waipara and even a fabulous Port Hills Pinot Gris less than 3 k's from the Hotel as the crow flies.  In keeping with the local theme, our espresso coffee utilizes coffee beans roasted by Hummingbird.

Bar facilities include a pool table, juke box, table soccer machine, dart board and the best kickass pinball machine in the "Revenge from Mars".  If anyone is capable of beating JEDs high score (that's me) they get a night on the house in one of our new super glamourous balcony queen rooms or they can have a nice slapdash two course meal on me.  I will of course be slightly annoyed and totally surprised if anyone can top it.  We also have wide screen LCD TV's featuring Sky sports, World disasters and other events so you can catch up with all the Super 15, All Blacks games, Natural disasters and maybe the Netball too.  We will not of course be rescreening the rugby world cup final as it was too hard to watch the first time.  All we wanted was a good old thrashing of Les Bleus and look what we got!

The main bar area features a comprehensive heating and cooling system, however, in winter you are likely to be greeted with a roaring open fire, which has sadly become a rarity in Canterbury.  Not forgetting to mention our stupendous world famous views (truly) some very groovy surround sounds and free wifi if you must (but please don't hog its GB or log on to anything I might get arrested for).

sleep

Our 6 guest rooms are located on the first floor level of the Hotel.  All of our rooms are newly renovated with 32 inch LCD TVs, queen size beds, free wifi broadband, heaters, alarm clock radios/iPhone chargers, electric blankets and vanities.  Four of our rooms have direct balcony access through French doors opening out to wonderful views over the Lyttelton harbour.  Great for an afternoon G & T, reading a book or an early morning cuppa. The other two rooms are equipped the same, are our cheapest but that's for a reason, it's all about the view.

Please note, all of our rooms are clean, contemporary and very comfortable, however, none are ensuited. Our guests use two separate shower and toilet areas. There are no cooking facilities in the rooms and our guests are encouraged to utilize our dining facilities.

Overnight accommodation starts from $119.00 per couple per night for our hillside queen, $139.00 per night for our balcony queens and $169 per night for our balcony king. All of our rates include a continental breakfast and free wifi broadband throughout the Hotel.

Due to the easy balcony access and stairs, our accommodation is not ideally suited to the disabled or for children under the age of 12. There are a number of cottages and Bed and Breakfast options also in the Bay and we are happy to recommend these should our accommodation not suit you.

To book a room please click the link below. You can check online our availability and select your favourite room. You can also book the old fashioned way by telephoning us on 03 3299433 or by emailing us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Latest News

Just discoved that in the early 1900's up to 250 people a day would arrive by ferry to seek out the hotel's "pleasure gardens".  I reckon our garden is looking pretty great right now but whatever constituted pleasure gardens back in this time who knows.

Hotel grown tomatoes, cucumbers and corn, all organically grown onsite, complimenting our dishes now

Birthday Parties

Birthday Parties
Celebrate your birthday in style at our Hotel whether you want a late lunch with a few friends on our new deck or splash out on a formal dinner in our restaurant. We have a number of exclusive areas where we can cater for your group privately with a number of appealing menu alternatives.

The Deck
Our new deck is already proving to be the favoured spot with large groups. Straight out from our main bar with gorgeous views overlooking Lyttelton harbour, this area can cater for groups of up to 30 seated or 50 standing up. Perfect for a long lunch with friends and family where guests can order off our extensive a la carte menu or you may wish to provide for them, with a range of enticing platters or cater for them from a range of our fixed two and three course menus.

Deck Party

The Snug
Our snug area is an intimate area suitable for smaller groups of up to 20 and especially suited to elderly groups or if the weather is inclimental.

Restraunt
Our fully renovated restaurant is an expansive private space suited for groups dining of between 30 and 70 guests. It contains separate loos and bar if required ans overlooks our garden area with glimpes out over the harbour. This space will generally attract a hire fee to book exclusively, however, this depends upon your catering requirements.

Restaurant

Gaming
The Games Room Is a self contained area seperated from our main bar. The area has its own sound system (juke box), pool table, fuze ball and pin ball machine. Hence, an area for the young at heart. Its exclusive use is subject to a hire fee.

Games Room2

Transport
Whilst we are a mere 20 minute drive from central Christchurch as a responsible host we recommend safe transportation options. Every mainstream taxi company operates to and fro Governors Bay and minicabs for up to 12 guests cost between $45 and $55 one way to Christchurch. We are happy to prearrange your journeys. Alternatively for larger groups of up to 42, The Red Bus company can pick up your guests and return them to a central point in Christchurch from around $300.00.

Accommodation
Want to have a sleep over party?? We have 6 guest rooms for up to 6 couples to enjoy our fully renovated first floor area. Check out our Sleep Page

Weddings

We love hosting weddings at our Hotel as it has been such a special venue for many couples who have celebrated their wedding receptions here and it gives us a chance to showcase our Hotel to its full potential.
The garden and deck areas are great outdoor spaces for your guests to mingle prior and during the event.

Our retaurant can cater for a seated reception up to 75 guests comfortably but many of our couples opt for a marquee on our side lawn for an expansive entertainment area as well.
A hire fee will apply for weddings and this is inclusive of meetings with our function co-ordinator, Clare Neville-Dyer, exclusive use of our restaurant, set up costs, white linen, staff, cutlery and glassware. The fee varies depending upon set-up requirements. The hire fee does not provide for exclusive use of our whole Hotel as our public bar area always remains open to the public, however, it is completely separate from our restaurant.

We also provide 6 guest bedrooms if you and your guests wish to make for a more memorable evening and why not indulge in a champagne breakfast the next morning?

Our proud history

Granted it's first license in 1870, the Hotel operated as the Ocean View Family Hotel and May Haulk was its pioneer publican. A rival pub, the Whitecliffs Hotel, was bought by a later owner of the Ocean View and was mysteriously burnt down when unoccupied.

Around 1903 the hotel was owned by Edward Brownie who had given up his job as a prison warder in 1903 in Lyttelton. His wife Rose, assisted in the running of the hotel offering first class accommodation and picnic areas for the day visitor. The Fred Pimms coaches passed daily between Lyttelton and Governors Bay. Steam ferries also moored at the the Maori Gardens wharf bringing other visitors. Pictured left is the Canterbury ferry unloading guests circa 1905. Other long term proprietors included, David Rodgers (1940-1965) and Pat McCarthy (1965-1975) and we probably should throw ourselves into this mix too.... Clare and Jeremy Dyer (2003-present).

Governors Bay was a favourite place for honeymooners from Christchurch before the advent of cheap airplane flights and we have met 100s of older folk who met, married or honeymooned at our hotel.

Through the late 1970s, 80s, and 1990s the hotel underwent a number of leasehold ownerships and fell into disrepair and disrepute at times. Locals tell of times when bikies ruled the roost and gangs set fire to rival gangs' motorcycles in the car park. During this period it was known briefly as the Smugglers Arms Hotel.

Although the hotel has undergone some substantial renovations over its long history, there are substantial parts of the original Hotel still in place. For instance the gabled roof in the picture above is still there behind a 1930s facade. Many old photos adorn the snug area in the hotel dating back throughout its history.

The hotel is currently owned by Jeremy Dyer and Clare Neville-Dyer. Jeremy was bought up in Christchurch but both he and Clare have being operating hotels and restaurants overseas for the past 20 years. Before their knowledge of the hotel, Clare had mentioned to Jeremy that the only place she would consider to live back in New Zealand was Governors Bay. Coincidentally, the hotel is located at the bottom of Dyers Pass road and only recently did we discover that prior to Governor Grey’s arrival in the Bay, it was known as Dyers Bay!

Meet the staff

Jed

Owner, Jeremy Dyer, spent the best part of his adult life searching for an occupation well suited to his 5 year quest for a BA in political science. However, after a 3 year stint in London's nightclubs and 12 years of managing pubs and restaurants in Melbourne, he decided that a "hospo" career was his fate.
With his partner, Clare, they purchased the soon to be critically aclaimed Athelstane House in Queenscliff, Victoria in 2000. The chance to purchase the Governors Bay Hotel was presented in 2003 and the rest is history. Jeremy has a passion for good wine, loves drinking it in his time off and can't quite understand why the world loves New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc quite so much. Give him a nice oaked Hawkes Bay Chardonnay or a central Otago Pinot and he is happy as Larry.

Clare 2

Owner, Function Manager and Executive Chef, Clare Neville-Dyer has a fine eye for detail that will serve you well in tailoring your event at the Hotel. A life long "foodie" Clare has a vast library of cookbooks and in conjunction with Ryan, updates our menus with a seasonal emphasis.
Much like her partner Jeremy, Clare never imagined a career in hospitality but she has accrued 35 years experience having owned several of her own ventures as well as managing Pizza Express, Wimbledon, Mexican Cantina, Wellington, Iain Hewitson's Last Aussie Fishcaf, South Melbourne, The Stokehouse, St. Kilda beach and Athelstane House, Queenscliff.

Holly

Bar Manager Holly Dyer has returned to the hospitality industry after a stint as a Visitor Host at the Air Force Museum and prior to that, as Curator at Aigantighe Art Gallery in Timaru. Holly completed a degree in Art History in 1998 but began her on again off again career in hospitality working for her uncle, Jeremy at the Metropolitan Hotel as a 17 year old.
Holly's welcoming demeanor and organisation skills means she is a natural in this industry however, it is the world of art that will draw her back one of these days, we hope she's here for a longtime yet however.

Hugo

Kitchenhand, Hugo Dyer. By now ,you may have the impression that there is a bit of a family theme going on here....and you would be right. Hugo, our second son, slots in part time when not studying year 12 at Christ's College, (we hope) chasing girls, playing guitar and on facebook (more likely). Hugo, to date has endured a long life of both parents working unsociable hours and is working on becoming an actor or rockstar, but never a publican.
